13 Great Bands that You’ve Never Heard Of
1. Destiny Potato
Destiny Potato. Weird band name, cool sound. These are two chicks and they make interesting music. If you’ve never heard of them, you’re not alone.
Eyedea is a rapper with an eloquent flow and he focuses his raps around the current state of government and oppression. His raps are quick and meticulous and if you like spoken-word poetry, rap or hip hop, he’s worth checking out.
Turnover has a great following and their music is innovative. Their sound is great to hype you up and their shows often are full of extremely animated individuals committed to their local music.
Atmosphere is underground rap that takes spoken word to the next level. Quick twists of the tongue paired with great back beats make for sick music. “Guns and Cigarettes” is a great track by Atmosphere as is “Between the Lines”.
5. Violent Soho
A solid mix of melody and harmony paired with a driving rock feel is what Violent Soho is about. Their sound is airy and floating in a happy way – listening to their music makes you want to drive with the top down in a convertible through South California.
6. Davenport Cabinet
Their riffs have elements of southern rock while their harmonies are vaguely reminiscent of what we liked about Sevendust when they first came onto the scene. Their vocals are clear and tonally beautiful. All in all, these guys rock in a great way.
7. Madroid Echostar
Madroid Echostar is VERY harmonious. Their vocals and light, acoustic sounding strumming blend well. At times the vocals can sound a bit emo / new rock, but overall, the kicking guitar riffs that remind of prog rock paired with the sweet voice of the lead vocalist are very solid.
Murs is a socially conscious hip-hop artist that focuses on raising awareness not only on the police and the urban lifestyle, but on intelligence, awareness and self responsibility.
9. Delta Rae
Delta Rae has an extraordinarily unique sound. They bring back the shout and call style of blues in their single “Bottom of the River”. Their beautiful blonde lead singer has an equally attractive voice. In many ways, Delta Rae’s music has tribal and blues under currents through it, and that makes them great.
If you like your metal dark, quick and mixed between melody and guttural, Velaraas is a great underground band to check out. They have moments of influence of Nordic-style metal as well as some heavier, almost goth sounds in their music.
11. Weerd Science
Weerd Science lays out some very solid rhymes about the hardest drug addictions, losses in love and life in general. His flow is great, if you can get past the depth of his heroin culture references. Don’t let the grim subject influence your pre-judgement: he’s worth taking a listen to.
12. Ambulance Ltd.
Light-hearted and reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s early 60’s protest songs, Ambulance Ltd’s sound is genuine and their lyrics are bouncy and cryptic in similar ways to the tripped-out Beatles days… All around, great happy music for happy people.
13. Gogol Bordello
Gogol Bordello is a unique blend of cultural fiddle licks, deeply accented front singer, Eugene Huetz, and accordion. Their music is full of jovial shouts, akin to “oy” music of Irish punk bands like Flogging Molly or the Dropkick Murphys.
